Heichal’s freshman students just completed a unit on genetic engineering in biology class and learned about the latest techniques in researching, analyzing and identifying genes of interest. Students learned about DNA extraction in the lab, specifically focusing on the steps involved in isolating DNA from other cellular components. DNA extraction is of significant importance in the process of genetic testing, developing diagnostics and drugs, forensics, sequencing and much more. It was an eye-opening experience as students had a chance to simulate actual techniques performed in contemporary labs working on DNA studies.
