This past week Heichal HaTorah had the tremendous privilege of hosting Rob Airley, father of IDF combat soldier, Binyamin Meir Airley Hy”d, who tragically lost his life al kiddush Hashem while defending Klal Yisroel. Rav Dovid Goldman, Judaic Studies menahel, introduced Mr. Airley, and emphasized the incredible zechus it was to have him speak to the talmidim, providing an opportunity for each talmud to recognize and appreciate the privilege of learning in yeshiva safely, protected by these dedicated soldiers.
Mr. Airley spoke about the importance of learning from his son’s example, sharing how Binyamin’s choices in life can serve as a model for others to uplift themselves. He described Binyamin’s character and his service as a paratrooper in the Chativat HaTzanchanim division, where he learned to protect others while putting his own life on the line. Mr. Airley also spoke about his son’s role as a “Negevist,” a position reserved for a select group of soldiers who operate the Negev machine gun. It was this role on that fateful day that required special training, which only a select few were qualified to undergo.
Additionally, Mr. Airley shared his reflections on the sense of hashgacha pratis (divine supervision) that the soldiers experience daily. Overall, Mr. Airley’s message to the talmidim emphasized the importance of striving to be one’s best self, staying focused on one’s goals and weighing what is important in life. The entire yeshiva was honored and deeply moved to have had the opportunity to hear such inspirational words from Mr. Airley.
