This past week Heichal’s senior medical ethics course had the privilege of hearing from Rabbi Jason Weiner, senior rabbi and director of the spiritual care department at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. As the head of the chaplaincy program and all aspects of patient spiritual care at Cedars-Sinai, Rabbi Weiner has authored books and published many articles on the practical application of Jewish medical ethics. Bringing his medical and rabbinic experience to life, Rabbi Weiner addressed complex and sensitive end-of-life issues with Heichal seniors describing delicate case scenarios involving the complex dynamics that exist between family members, patients and hospital physicians and how Halacha intersects with each of those points. Rabbi Weiner reviewed the many halachic, medical and ethical issues that arise in such circumstances and the importance of spiritual leaders and rabbanim being consulted to guide loved ones during these trying times. The students were amazed at how complex the cases become and appreciated the ability to relate concepts learned in the classroom to reality-based circumstances in a very engaging way. Heichal staff was grateful for the opportunity to welcome Rabbi Weiner virtually into their learning and enhance the student experience with thought-provoking discussions.
