How to Prevent and Relieve Dry Hands

Everyone needs to wash their hands thoroughly to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other viruses. However, many people have been experiencing dry, cracked, irritated skin as a result of the increased handwashing and use of alcohol-based hand sanitizer. It is important to continue with the thorough handwashing; however, there are steps that you can take to help prevent and relieve dry skin.

1. Use gentle soap or cleanser and lukewarm water to wash your hands.

2. After you wash your hands, gently pat them dry and then immediately apply a fragrance-free moisturizer to the slightly damp skin. If you use hand sanitizer, wait until it has dried before applying a moisturizer.

3. Use a squeeze tube to dispense the cream instead of dipping your hands into a jar multiple times. Give a small tube to each family member instead of sharing a communal jar of moisturizer to avoid spreading germs.

4. Thick, oil-based creams provide a more intensive, hydrating treatment than a lighter, water-based lotion (which often comes in a pump container). When buying cream, look for a product that contains mineral oil, petrolatum or ceramides. If you have sensitive skin, avoid products that contain fragrances and dyes.

5. If your hands are very dry and irritated, apply a heavy cream, ointment or fragrance-free Vaseline (petroleum jelly) to your hands at night. Cover your hands with cotton gloves to avoid causing greasy stains. This will allow you to get an intensive moisturizing treatment while you are relaxing or sleeping.

6. If the air in your home is dry, use a humidifier to add moisture to the air.

7. Wear long, insulated rubber cleaning gloves to protect your skin while washing the dishes or using home cleaning products.
