Inspiration for Aphasia Center

I am writing with regard to the article by Sharon Mark Cohen (“Adler Aphasia Center Is Ready to Help in West Orange”) published in the October 28, 2021 issue of The Jewish Link. First, I would like to thank you for the coverage of our open house and the publicity about the Adler Aphasia Center.

I would just like to correct an error in the article. Ms. Cohen states Mike Adler and his wife, Elaine, “founded AAC after unsuccessfully seeking help from around the world.” In fact, the Adlers modeled the Adler Aphasia Center after centers they visited in England, Canada and California. It was after Mr. Adler had completed traditional speech therapy that he and his wife felt he wasn’t prepared to “live” his life with aphasia. After doing research through a medical librarian, they found aphasia centers in these three aforementioned locations, and learned about the Life Participation Approach to aphasia.
