Intense Fighting Winds Down; Two Additional Soldiers Killed in Gaza

Hamas report: Hamas to take 1,000 boxes of medicine for every one going to hostages.

Israeli forces continued to target terrorists and infrastructure throughout the Gaza Strip on Wednesday, Jan. 17, over the past 24 hours eliminating a Hamas interrogation chief and destroying a launch site used to fire rockets at Netivot.

Bilal Nofal, a Hamas operative responsible for interrogating individuals suspected of involvement in espionage activities against the terrorist organization in the southern Gaza Strip, was killed in an airstrike, according to the Israel Defense Forces. Nofal also played a role in advancing Hamas’s research and development efforts.

“His elimination significantly impacts the terrorist organization’s capacity to develop and enhance its capabilities,” the IDF said.

Furthermore, Israeli forces on Tuesday located the site from which, earlier in the day, terrorists launched a massive barrage of over 50 rockets at the southern Israeli city of Netivot.

Footage shared to social media showed some two dozen interceptions by the Iron Dome air defense system. Israeli media reported that one rocket struck a store in Netivot and another hit a warehouse in the adjacent community of Givolim, causing damage.

There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Troops found three launchers, each with 10 barrels, several of which were loaded with rockets. The compound and launchers were destroyed.

In the Hamas stronghold of Khan Yunis in southern Gaza, troops directed a helicopter to kill three terrorists who escaped to a building after firing mortar shells at the soldiers.

Additionally, two terrorists were killed and a large amount of weapons were found in the outskirts of Sheikh Ijlin in central Gaza.

Israeli naval forces also struck several Hamas targets on Tuesday night.

Two Soldiers Slain in Gaza

The Israeli military death toll rose to 190 since the Gaza ground campaign began on Oct. 27 with the announcement on Wednesday of the deaths of two more soldiers.

Master Sgt. (res.) Zechariah Pesach Haber, 32, from Jerusalem, and Sgt. Maj. (res.) Yair Katz, 34, from Holon, were killed in battle in northern Gaza on Tuesday.

The death toll on all fronts since the war began on Oct. 7 stands at 525.

Hamas to Take 1,000 Boxes of Medicine for Every One Going to Hostages

(JNS) Medicines destined for Israeli hostages, but most of which will end up serving the Hamas terrorist organization, arrived in Egypt on Wednesday, Jan. 17 and are on the way to the Gaza border.

“A senior Hamas official said that for every box provided for the hostages, 1,000 boxes would be sent in for Palestinians,” AP reported.

Israel also agreed to allow more aid trucks into the Gaza Strip.

A controversy has arisen within Israel over the terms of the deal, which allow the shipment to pass through without IDF inspection.

According to Channel 12, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that he didn’t deal with the inspection arrangements, pointing to the army as the authority responsible for overseeing the shipment.

“The prime minister instructed that medicine be delivered to the abductees, but did not deal at all with the inspection arrangements for their entry, which are determined by the IDF and the security forces,” according to the Prime Minister’s Office on Wednesday.

However, the IDF denied that it had been asked for its opinion on the matter, saying it only learned of the deal from remarks by senior Hamas official Musa Abu Marzouk.

Queried on the issue by JNS, Prime Minister’s Office Spokesman Eylon Levy said that he couldn’t comment on the “specific modalities” of how the aid will enter Gaza.

Under the deal brokered by Qatar and France, two Qatari military planes flew to Egypt’s El Arish airport near the Rafah border crossing with Gaza.

Qatari representatives will personally accompany the shipment to its “final destination” in the Strip, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

“Israel insists that all the medicines reach their destination,” the statement added.

France sent the medicines to Qatar after an agreement with Doha was reached late last week.

French President Emmanuel Macron ordered the foreign ministry in Paris to make a list of medicines for 45 captives who need them and who have been hostages for more than 100 days. They were purchased and delivered to Doha on Saturday.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum, a group representing relatives of the captives, has said it would demand “visual proof” that the medicine had reached the hostages.
