On Wednesday, May 11, Yavneh Academy was proud to welcome Janell Burley Hofmann, the founder of the iRules Academy, an international author, speaker and consultant specializing in technology and media and its impact on social emotional well-being. She spent the day at Yavneh and ran interactive, dynamic workshops with students in grades four through eight. Students discussed topics such as how technology has changed the world and their lives. She also asked them to share what they love about technology and what worries them about its misuse. Hofmann also taught them some key technology safety terms like being a share stopper, remembering to use the billboard, not forgetting to use the pause button, having a technology curfew and getting permission to post; all terms the students now understand in order to be able to benefit from their technology use without harm. Hofmann stressed the importance of finding an askable adult to consult with when students have questions or worries about technology use. The day culminated with a practical workshop with faculty to address how, as teachers, they can integrate technology in a healthy way in their classrooms. Hofmann relayed numerous positive technology use concepts to both students and faculty that can be utilized daily.
