Israel: ‘Hamas, Don’t Mess With the Holocaust’

At press time, as 50 world leaders continued to arrive in Israel for the fifth annual World Holocaust Forum in Jerusalem, Israel has sent Hamas a warning that it will respond immediately and with force if the terrorist organization attempts to undermine the forum.

The op-ed in an Arab newspaper was unequivocally offensive and threatening: “One shot will disrupt the ceremony and one dead body will cancel [it],” wrote Yahya Rabah on Jan. 18.

The extended guest list for the Friday event includes U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Prince Charles of Great Britain, King Felipe VI of Spain, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and French President Emmanuel Macron. We are glad to see that our allies stand with us, and we know that thousands of police officers, security forces and members of Israel’s Shin Bet security agency were deployed across the capital beginning Tuesday to secure the leaders’ visit and ensure that nothing happens to them.

It’s a grotesque sign of the times that even the remembrance of the Holocaust is being seen as something that Arabs can attack. Titled “Remembering the Holocaust: Fighting Anti-Semitism,” this year’s forum will commemorate 75 years since the 1945 liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp.

Since we personally know Holocaust survivors who endured these horrors, we know that the spectre of genocidal hate must never be repeated. It is our duty to remember this, as we remember all the horrors perpetrated on the Jewish people. And we must remind our neighbors in the region that we are not going to forget what genocidal hate looks like or let it be repeated.

This time we are not powerless to fight against this hate. Our world leaders stand bravely with us and we are grateful to them.
