JCC Center Stage Musical Theater Camp Features Of Princes, Beasts and Beauties

Tenafly—Center Stage, the JCC’s full-day musical theater camp, is now registering 9–14-year-old students for a fabulous three-week adventure in acting, improv, movement, and song that will culminate in a Broadway-style musical production of Of Princes, Beasts and Beauties. All students will have the opportunity to develop their talent and stage presence and experience the pleasures of performing at a very high level. The camp will also offer scenery and lighting experience for those who are interested in these aspects of theater, and will include swimming in the JCC Olympic-sized pool for the last hour of the day.

Of Princes, Beasts and Beauties cleverly interweaves story lines from both Beauty and the Beast and Snow White into a very funny version of Rogers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella and includes challenging dialogue for actors, big musical numbers for everyone, and solos for those who would like them. In the final gala production, everyone will delight in a new take on the popular fairy tale world, where the seven dwarves work in the Beast’s mines, special invitations to the big Ball are sent to all the castles in the neighborhood, and each girl expects to meet a Prince. Favorite songs will include Be Our Guest, Impossible, and In My Own Little Corner. Daily schedule includes workshops in acting, improvisation, stage combat, movement, and singing.

Center Stage, open to students entering Grades 4–9, will meet Monday–Friday, June 29–July 17, 9:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. Orientation/Placement Day is Sunday, June 28, with the performance on Thursday, July 16, 5:15 pm. The camp is led by Deborah Roberts, Director of Performing Arts at the JCC and Amelia DeMayo, who has trained many vocal students now performing in Broadway shows. The talented staff also includes Anne Pasquale, well-known NY Actress and instructor/director from Strasberg, who will be teaching acting and improv and Kristina Horn, who will head dance.

The camp is open to JCC members of all ages and nonmembers ages 10 and up. Price of three-week session includes DVD of performance. Cost is $1,080 JCC members, $1,395 nonmembers. This year, for the very first time, those who register their children by March 31 will receive a 10% discount, a savings of $100 and more. Siblings also receive a 10% discount on camp. Lunch options and early drop-off available for small additional fees.
