The JEC Lower School observed Yom HaShoah with a selection of meaningful opportunities for the different grade levels. The third graders listened to “Terrible Things: An Allegory of the Holocaust,” by Eve Bunting. This tale introduced a key and age-appropriate theme, standing up against hate. In preparation for the day, the sixth grade girls read a selection of first-person accounts, which described how a belief in Hashem and a commitment to His laws shaped these survivors’ Holocaust experiences. In a moving presentation to the fourth and fifth graders, the sixth graders shared the details and theme of their research. In addition, the fourth and fifth grade members of the JEC Lower School choir participated in a joint performance in a community-wide commemoration of Yom HaShoah at Kean University.
