BOOM! Volcanoes erupted in the JEC Lower School second grade class alongside their teachers Aliza Berkowitz and Esti Cantor. As a culminating project to the pebbles, sand and silt science unit, the students paired up and constructed volcanoes out of air dry clay! Magma is molten rock—a perfect connection to our science unit in which the children studied and engaged in hands on activities using three types of volcanic rocks. A volcano is a mountain with an opening at the top that sometimes sends out rocks, ash or lava in a sudden explosion! The students learned all about the parts of a volcano and were able to identify and label each part: magma, lava, vent, crater and ash cloud.
