On Tuesday afternoon., FBI New Jersey, the Hudson County SWAT Team, New Jersey’s Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and other law enforcement agencies responded to an active shooter situation in Jersey City, New Jersey, in the vicinity of Jersey City Kosher Supermarket, a kosher grocery store on Martin Luther King Drive.
The shooting reportedly began at around 12:30 p.m., when a gunman fired at an officer in the Bayview Cemetery, fled into the Jersey City Kosher Supermarket and continued firing. The shooter reportedly held several people hostage inside the supermarket. All have now been released. However, when police officers entered the store sometime after 3 p.m., six individuals were reportedly found dead, including one law enforcement official. Two additional police officers and a civilian were also reportedly injured and said to be in stable condition at this time.
There were reports at the scene of a two shooters, a man and a woman, dressed in black. At press time it was reported that the shooters had been neutralized.
It was reported on Twitter that the two police officers had been shot, one in the shoulder and another in the head. Other reports stated that the officers were injured by shrapnel.
The roads, schools and local train lines have been placed on lockdown.
At press time, the incident was not believed to be terror-related.
