Jewish Federation Establishes Community Group Insurance Program

(Courtesy of JFNNJ) The Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey is dedicated to preserving, fostering and securing a vibrant local Jewish community for today and beyond. As the community adviser, we provide leadership, vision, guidance and the resources necessary to help people in need. Working collaboratively with donors, volunteers and other Jewish organizations, we are transforming lives together.

The Jewish Federation of Northern New Jersey is proud to announce the establishment of a community group health insurance association plan available right now to Jewish day schools and agencies. It will be open for enrollment to synagogues within the next few months. This program comes under the Kehillah Cooperative initiative that has successfully offered savings to many community organizations in credit card fees, energy, office supplies, security, etc. Since the inception of the Kehillah Cooperative, community organizations have collectively saved over $3,500,000 dollars.

According to Debbie Gottlieb, manager of Kehillah Cooperative, creating a community group insurance program has been a goal of the Kehillah Cooperative for years, but faced many roadblocks through the years. According to Ms. Gottlieb, “As insurance costs continue to soar, schools, synagogues and organizations are challenged to manage a non-profit budget and still offer employees competitive insurance plans. Our goal was to create a program that maintained the integrity of each organization yet at the same time offer “richer” benefits at significant savings.” The SINAI Schools, Ben Porat Yosef and Solomon Schechter Day School of Bergen County are examples of the schools that have enrolled in this program, and more organizations are expected to join shortly. The savings that the schools are realizing are quite substantial, while being able to offer a more attractive benefits package. Being part of a larger pool also serves to shield the organizations from exorbitant price increases upon renewal.

Federation CEO Jason M. Shames says, “This is a huge accomplishment for our organization and the entire community. This speaks directly to the mission of Jewish Federation as the organization that has the unique ability to address the needs of the entire community. I am thrilled Debbie was able to make this happen. The savings for our community will be significant.”
