Jewish Home Building Sukkahs For Region’s Elderly

Safely@Home, formerly Bonim Builders, is helping the region’s older adults and physically challenged individuals build the festive hut—called a sukkah—for the upcoming Jewish festival of Sukkot.

“Our volunteers are once again available to help assemble your sukkah in time for the holidays,” says Safely@Home’s Stacey Orden, who is putting out the call for both volunteers and those in need.

Orden can be reached at [email protected] or 201-518-1175. People in need of assistance should make contact by Wednesday, September 9. Volunteers are invited to reach out in advance as well. The sukkah construction will take place on Sunday, September 13 through Sunday, September 20. Assistance with disassembly is also needed on Sunday, October 11. All ages are welcome, but volunteers under 16 must be accompanied by a participating adult.

“Building a sukkah is a fun and rewarding project for individuals and families,” Orden says. “It is also a meaningful mitzvah.” The huts recall the way the Jewish people lived in the desert following the exodus from Egypt, as well as the harvest-time huts built by Israelite farmers once they settled in Israel.

There are also opportunities for the younger and/or more artistically inclined to help create decorations for the sukkahs. Contact [email protected] for more information.

Hundreds of committed Safely@Home volunteers have performed critical repairs and renovations over the last 14 years. Since joining the Jewish Home Family, it continues to grow, with plans to expand home-modification services to include additional services to facilitate successful aging at home.
