Jewish Music Across the Mediterranean: A Night of Unity, Song and Support

This past Thursday night, something special happened at the Jewish Center of Teaneck. It wasn’t just a concert, it was a celebration of Jewish unity, an evening filled with joy, connection and purpose.

Bergen B’Yachad’s Jewish Music Across the Mediterranean brought together Jews from across Bergen County to experience the musical traditions of Jewish communities from Israel, Greece, Turkey, Spain, Egypt, Morocco and beyond. The incredible musicians — Avram Pengas, Nick Mandoukas, David Malka and Shlomo Shai transported the audience through generations of history and tradition, blending cultures and melodies in a way that touched the soul.

You couldn’t help but tap your foot, nod your head or sway to the music. The energy in the room was electric, and the highlights of the night were unforgettable: dueling bouzoukis, the entire crowd singing “Od Yavo Shalom Aleinu” in unison, and the moving moment when everyone swayed together to “Yerushalayim Shel Zahav.” For a few hours, differences melted away and all that remained was the joy of being together as one people.

But the evening wasn’t just about the music. It was also about what it means to be there for each other. That night, we didn’t just listen, we acted. A family in Tzfat, struggling due to the war and on the verge of financial collapse, needed help. And this community came through. Through the generosity of those in the room, we raised over $2,000 — enough to keep them afloat and get them out of collections.

This is what Bergen B’Yachad is all about. It’s about showing up for each other, for our community, and for Jews near and far. It’s about recognizing that we are stronger together and that even a simple act of attending an event, singing a song, lending a hand can create waves of impact.

We look forward to more evenings like this, where we can celebrate, connect and continue building something meaningful together. If you’d like to stay updated on upcoming events, join our WhatsApp group or sign up for our mailing list at www.bergenbyachad.com.

Bergen B’Yachad is a nonprofit organization with one goal: bringing the Jewish community together. If you want to be part of this mission, whether by attending, volunteering or supporting in any way please reach out.

Because at the end of the day, the music fades, but the connections we create and the kindness we share are what truly last.
