Over the past few months JKHA first graders have been conducting a hands-on investigation of China and Chinese culture. They learned the geography, about time differences and about the Great Wall of China—which they then built using different materials in the library Makerspace. They read all about the Chinese New Year, made lanterns and dragon puppets and learned to write their names in Chinese. Their study taught them about the similarities and differences between American and Chinese cultures, along with a heightened appreciation for the different traditions and ways of life. The students were so excited to culminate their unit where they rotated through centers and learned to count to 10 in Chinese, did Chinese math, relaxed with a zen garden and visited a museum of Chinese artifacts. They concluded the celebration with a Chinese feast and dragon parade.
