JKHA Gan Bet Combines Torah and Science

In order to enhance students’ learning about Columbus Day and Parshat Noach, the students in the Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy Gan Bet classes enjoyed a hands-on experiment about sinking and floating. Students were asked to make predictions about different classroom objects’ (such as a pencil, rubber band and crayon) ability to sink or float. They marked their answers with a sad or happy face and then tried dropping the objects into buckets of water. The students were amazed that while one group’s rubber band floated on top of the water the other group’s sunk. How could that be? Finally, they recorded what actually happened and compared it to the original predictions. The classes then connected this activity to math by counting up how many times the object floated and how many times it didn’t.
