As part of their preparation for Rosh Hashanah, JKHA seventh and eighth grade students had a once in seven year opportunity to learn about and experience the mitzvah of shemitat kesafim, the nullification of loans, which happens at the end of the shemitah year. They also learned about the pruzbul form, which allows one to collect loans after shemitah. In a hands-on learning experience that demonstrated “living Torah,” students completed their own pruzbul forms and submitted their forms before a beit din. Students reflected on how this mitzvah highlights the ability for a fresh start and the obligation to help those in need. Students who finished their forms spent time writing emails to their future selves which will be sent in seven years about their hopes and dreams for the future. This learning experience will guarantee that students remember the mitzvah of shemitat kesafim the next time it comes around in seven years, and for the rest of their lives.
