After reading the book “The Hundred Dresses,” in which the main character was teased for always wearing the same faded dress, JKHA second graders organized a school-wide clothing drive to help those in need. The second graders brought the many bags they collected filled with clothing, shoes, blankets and more to RKYHS to Rabbi Kirsch and the RKYHS Homeless Awareness Club. The students were overwhelmed to see how much clothing they had collected all together.
The students were so gratified to know that it was delivered on the day before Thanksgiving by the RKYHS Homeless Awareness Club. Club members brought with them all the clothing and cold weather essentials that the second graders collected in their clothing drive, as well as cornbread baked by the second graders for the homeless. The group visited the Second Home Shelter in Newark where they sorted and handed out food and clothes, and spent time with those experiencing homelessness. The group then headed to Irvington’s Jay’s Shelter to drop off clothing to those in need.
