JKHA Students Get Weather Lesson

JKHA students welcomed John Elliot, meteorologist from CBS New York to school. Elliot was joined by seventh and fifth graders as he conducted a live broadcast of the weather for the daytime newscasts from outside the school building. Students learned how the weather gets broadcast and visited the CBS New York weather truck.

Prior to the broadcast, Elliot visited a second grade class who were in the midst of learning a unit on the weather. Students were excited to learn about the weather from a real meteorologist and Elliot was impressed with their knowledge of the weather. Topics covered in his lessons to the students included how meteorologists predict weather, accuracy of weather predictions, lessons about the weather, different weather patterns including tornadoes and hurricanes, the concepts of global warming and climate change, lessons in physics, climatology and more.

Second graders recently made anemometers. They built them and then tried them in front of different speeds on a fan. They noticed that the faster the speed/wind, the faster the anemometer went, and learned how and why this occured.
