Over the past month, the first graders at JKHA have been conducting a hands-on investigation of China and the Chinese culture, which culminated in a Chinese feast celebration. The unit focused on world geography, comparing and contrasting our American culture and Chinese culture and learning about the Chinese New Year. The students learned how to write their names and count in Chinese, made lanterns and dragon masks, worked peacefully in Zen Gardens and built the Great Wall of China with sugar cubes and blocks to reinforce their study of this wonder of the world.
The students have developed an understanding of the similarities and differences between our American culture and the Chinese culture, along with a heightened appreciation for the different traditions and ways of life across the world.
