JLBC Yasher Koach of the Week: Rebecca Gellis and Nicole Rothenberg

On November 17, two local Yeshiva High School athletes will join forces to raise money for Tomchei Shabbos of Bergen County, while running the famous Las Vegas 1/2 Marathon. Rebecca Gellis (Frisch ‘15) and Nicole Rothenberg (Maayanot ‘15) have set their goal to raise $5000 for Tomchei Shabbos.

Tomchei Shabbos of Bergen County provides hundreds of Bergen County families with food each and every Shabbos, food that they would not have otherwise been able to afford. The organization is run and operated entirely by volunteers, almost all of the money raised goes to help our neighbors in need.

These two remarkable young ladies are High School Juniors and tremendous athletes; Rebecca plays on Frisch’s soccer and volleyball teams, and Nicole plays on Maayanot’s hockey and softball teams.  In addition to being wonderful athletes, they have internalized the value of chessed that their parents have taught. The JLBC asked both girls why they chose to run for Tomchei Shabbos of Bergen County.

Nicole: “I can’t and don’t want to even imagine what it would be like for a family to not have enough food for Shabbos. While living in this community I feel a personal obligation to support such an important and worthy cause.”

Rebecca:  “Shabbos is the highlight of my week. Being surrounded by family and friends at our table only enhances the uniqueness of this day. I could not imagine that there are people who don’t have food to be able to enjoy shabbos to the fullest.”
