The Jewish Link of New Jersey and Gotham Burger would like to recognize SAR hockey goaltender Jonah Amron as this week’s Sportstar of the week. The 17-year-old SAR goalie has had a stellar season. SAR entered the playoffs with a first round bye and Jonah has made a tremendous impact on the team’s making it to the semi-finals. Amron’s teammate, Sam Schwalbe, told the JLNJ, “He is an absolute pleasure to be around, and our team would not be nearly as successful if we did not have him.”
Jonah who would you say is your role model?
My role model since I was very young has always been Patrick Roy (greatest goalie of all time). I wear his number and play a very similar style of goaltending.
What is your pregame meal?
Because I’m a goalie I have very superstitious pregame rituals, for example I eat the exact same thing before every game. My meal consists of a cliff bar, a bottle of water, and a grilled chicken sandwich with lettuce, tomato and mayo. It’s pretty boring, but it does the trick.
What is your earliest sports memory?
My earliest sports memory has to be the first time I ever saw people playing hockey. I remember I was about 3 or 4 and I was with my dad. We had walked by a roller hockey rink and I stopped and watched this guy take the puck down the rink and rip a crazy fast slap shot on goal. I was literally in awe at how quickly the goalie reacted and made an amazing glove save. From that moment on I knew that I wanted to play hockey.
What is your favorite sports memory?
My favorite sports memory would have to be my playoff game last year against DRS. Coming into the game, SAR had never won a game at DRS and we were heavy underdogs from the start of the season; we weren’t even projected to make the playoffs. However, we came into the game on fire. We played incredible shut-down defense and held the game 0-0 through three periods. Going into overtime, our coaches gathered us close and said, “Who’s it gonna’ be who’s gonna’ end this?” We came out of the locker room on fire and with three minutes left in the period Azriel Lavi came up the rink and passed to the middle and Josh Rosenberg blasted it in. It was best feeling ever; I can’t even put it into words.
What is your favorite thing to do when not playing sports?
My favorite thing to do when not playing hockey is probably to eat or sleep. I’m always down for a nap.
What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?
The best thing about being a Sportstar is probably getting some appreciation for all the hard work and training it’s taken to become good at goalie. It’s been a lot of very early and very tough practices to get to this point. Thank you for the consideration.
