Joseph Miller is an expert woodworker who has been building furniture for most of his life. As a young boy growing up in Russia, he worked as an apprentice in a woodworking factory to help support his family. His hard work and dedication ultimately led him to become an expert in custom furniture and high-quality kitchens.
Miller’s experience spans six decades and four countries and has earned him veteran status in the world of woodworking. In 1975 Miller moved his family from Russia to Israel, and then to Italy where they awaited entry into the United States. After immigrating to America, Miller set up shop in Brooklyn, where he continued to create kitchens and other types of furniture for many, many years. “My father probably built half the kitchens in Borough Park,” his son Ben joked. Four years ago, Miller, along with Ben and his family, decided to move to Teaneck, close to Miller’s other two children, Esty and Frieda, and their families.
Once settled in town, Miller opened his company, JosephM Custom Woodwork on Palisade Avenue, next door to Suburban Cabinets, which he also acquired. Specializing in all types of custom furniture with an emphasis on kitchens, they build whatever the client envisions. “If you can think it, my father can create it,” said Ben, who added that his father’s craftsmanship is in a league of its own and he takes great pride in every piece he builds.
Miller is shomer Shabbat and has a keen understanding of what it means to create a kosher kitchen. Ben said his father is not just a master woodworker, he also has a creative sense and offers his clients innovative ways to maximize space and appearance. Miller works on all types of jobs from small projects like custom vanities to full kitchen renovations. For those who aren’t looking for custom work, he offers three lines of stock cabinets which are on display at Suburban Cabinets.
Miller aims to prioritize each customer and attempt to provide exactly what they want and need. Josh from Teaneck recently worked with Miller and had this to say: “Mr. Miller is a joy to work with. It’s like doing business with a friend. He advised us on what cabinet pieces to purchase to expand our kitchen. He was very accommodating and patient, a true mensch.”
Toby Kinderlehrer spent months searching for the right woodworker to update her kitchen. She connected with Miller, who came to her house and immediately presented her with ideas that substantially upgraded the existing kitchen. “Miller sees things most people don’t notice,” Kinderlehrer said, and added that the first thing that impressed her was his creative sense. She described working with him as efficient, timely and cost-effective. One door opens another, as the saying goes, and after Miller made her cabinets, she commissioned him to build a new kitchen table as well as a desk for her husband’s home office. She added that the timeline was outstanding, and the project was completed precisely as promised. “I can’t recommend JosephM Custom Woodwork enough.”
