JV Cougars, Exciting Finish to a Great Season

On Feb 18th, the Flatbush Falcons faced off against the Frisch Cougars in the first round of the playoffs (JV) at Frisch. Neither team had played each other before, so neither team knew what to expect.

Frisch and Flatbush came out with playoff intensity, and both goalies stood tall. Shot after shot went against Flatbush, yet Frisch wasn’t able to capitalize until the dying minutes of the second period. Eight percent of the goals in this league come off of crashing the net (quote from coach: Yossi Sasson), and that’s exactly what happened. The ball was shot from the point on net, a scramble ensued, and Bryan Alter was able to flick it in, putting Frisch ahead 1-0.

Coming into the 3rd, Frisch knew it couldn’t take any shift lightly. Possession was mainly kept within the Flatbush zone, yet one shot from a Flatbush offense man hit the crossbar, but the play was called back for an injured player in the Flatbush zone. Time continued to wind down with the score still at 1-0, but with seconds to go defenseman Samuel Wietschner was able to make a beautiful feed to offense man Yehuda (Michael) Brinn, who was all alone and put a nice shot, top shelf, to increase the lead to 2-0 and ultimately put away the game.

Monday night, March 2nd, Frisch traveled to the Five Towns to take on Rambam in the semi-final game. Again, neither team knew what to expect, yet each team was prepared for the game. Frisch came out with an intensity like no other, with every shift a dominating one for Frisch. Still, Rambam got a 1-0 lead with a little to go in the first period. During the 2nd period, Joe Tropp stepped up and took a bad angle shot that trickled in to tie it up at 1. In the 3rd period, with two minutes left to play, Benjy Feintuch held on to the ball, got past the Rambam goalie, and backhanded a goal. But the goal was overruled, and so the game went into overtime. With a few minutes left in OT, the Frisch season ended with a shot from half court….
