The Kaplen JCC on the Palisades is now taking registration for its 22-week partnership with a local farm that will provide members who purchase advance shares with the opportunity to enjoy locally grown, certified organic produce from June 12 to November 6. Full shares average 8-10 vegetable varieties, competitively priced for less than $24 a week.
To launch the season, Ken and Maryellen of FreeBird Farm will visit the JCC on Sunday, April 29, at 1 p.m. Maryellen will lead a wonderful veggie stir-fry demo and tasting for adults, while Ken and his kids conduct a planting demo with the children. Everyone who signs up as a CSA member by or on April 29, can attend for $5 per adult (children free). Public cost is $10 per adult.
The JCC partnership with Freebird Farm—located in Palantine Bridge, New York—is an example of what is known as Community Supported Agriculture, where members receive a healthy supply of fresh organic, seasonal produce each week and support local farming at the same time. Full and half shares are mandatory, with the option to add shares of fruit, free-range eggs, maple syrup and a variety of other goods such as organic, free-trade chocolate and coffee.
Registration deadline for this year’s season is May 23. JCC members and non-members can participate. For more information or to purchase a CSA share, register online at www.jccotp.org or contact Marilyn Yeshua at [email protected].
