(Courtesy of Kaplen JCC on the Palisades) Always looking to help people find new ways to stay in shape, reach their fitness goals and have fun doing it, the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades is launching pickleball in its state-of-the-art indoor gym facilities this February with the Stavri Tennis Academy. Pickleball is one of fastest-growing sports in the United States, combining elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis, where two or four players use wooden paddles to hit a wiffle-like ball over a net. The rules are simple and the game is easy for beginners to learn, but the fun part is that it can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for players to grow with.
People interested in starting the New Year with a great, healthy sport that provides exercise, socialization and fun all at the same time are welcome to attend a free Pickleball Open House on Monday, February 4, 10-11:15 a.m. or 11:30 a..m-12:45 p.m., where they can learn about the game, meet the coaches and even try their hand at playing.
Beginner Pickleball clinics will then begin February 11 and meet for four Mondays through March 4. People can sign up for 8, 9, 10 or 11 a.m. sessions that meet for 50 minutes each. Cost is $90 JCC members; $110 public. Equipment is provided. More experienced players are encouraged to take part in open play time, which will be offered on Wednesdays and Fridays, 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Cost is $10 JCC members and $15 public, which can be paid per session or by purchasing drop-in cards for extra savings. Equipment available on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.
Due to its growing popularity as a national sport, early registration is suggested. Register online at jccotp.org/pickleball. For more information, call Esther at 201-408-1456.
