(Courtesy of Kaplen JCC on the Palisades) Kaplen JCC on the Palisades will show “Bagels Over Berlin” on Wednesday, October 18, at 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.
“Bagels Over Berlin” is a captivating documentary based on riveting interviews with Jewish airmen who fought in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. It provides a unique perspective of the war, offering audiences rich insights into the experiences of Jewish men who struggled bravely and heroically against Nazi Germany.
The story is compelling for numerous reasons:
It preserves incredible stories about men who never shared what they experienced with anyone, including their families, preserving a piece of history that would otherwise be lost.
It dispels the erroneous view that Jews in America in the 1930s were mostly shopkeepers and peddlers who were disinclined to be fighters, and definitely not war heroes.
And it validates the heroic roles so many Jewish Americans embraced as they fought to protect the American way of life. Not only did these men volunteer to serve, but they chose— in disproportionately large numbers—to serve in the Air Corps, which suffered the highest mortality rates of all branches of service.
“Bagels Over Berlin” is a film about brave and patriotic Jewish American men who became WW II war heroes and it pays special tribute to the perils they faced, without being grim, as it is a story told with both poignancy and humor.
The screening will be attended by two special guests: the film’s director, Alan Feinberg, and Gerald Gersten, an airman featured in the film, who lives locally. Cost: $8.00 JCC members, $10.00 public. For more information, or to register, please call 201-408-1496.
