Kaplen JCC Plans ‘Israel at 70’ Communal Celebrations

(Courtesy of Kaplen JCC) To celebrate the 70-year marker of Israeli independence, the Kaplen JCC on the Palisades will be holding the following special programs, culminating in a fun and festive community-wide Yom Ha’atzmaut celebration. Both fun and educational, these programs will allow our community to gain a deeper appreciation for Israeli life and culture. Programming will include music, food, film festivals, art exhibitions and guest speakers and will continue into the summer with a festive Israel Day Parade in June and special Israeli camp experiences in the summer.

Community Art Celebration

The JCC’s Waltuch Art Gallery will feature a month-long art exhibition in April showcasing 24 local artists whose works reflect appreciation for Israel, its people, culture and history. The exhibit includes an exciting mix of paintings, photographs and mixed-media works resulting in a colorful, must-see, community art celebration.

Fashion & Lifestyle Fair

Celebrate Israel at 70 as our 20 top Israeli designers will feature all the latest trends in Israeli fashion, décor and everything lifestyle for you to purchase for your home and family!

Independence Day Celebration

Join us for our annual Yom Ha’atzmaut event—our biggest ever—celebrating Israel’s independence with music, arts and crafts, food, games and a lot of community spirit. Co-sponsored with IAC NJ. Sunday, Apr. 22, 1-4 p.m., $18 per family.

Israel Story Presents Mixtape: The Stories Behind Israel’s Ultimate Playlist

In a dazzling presentation, Israel’s most popular podcast and award-winning radio show will share the tales and music of Israel’s seven decades. In a new live show written expressly for this milestone celebration, Israel Story will take us behind the scenes of some of Israel’s most (and least) iconic songs while exploring the complexities of life in Israel. Israeli Film: The Band’s Visit

With Harold Chapler. “The Band’s Visit” (2007), with English subtitles: An Egyptian band arrives in a remote Israeli town by mistake on the last bus of the day. During the band’s forced stay, the townsfolk and band members discover a common humanity—with humor. Join Harold for a discussion following the film. Thursday, April 26, 11 a.m., $8/$10.

Israeli Society Through the Lens of Cinema

Join film expert Dr. Eric Goldman as he examines the changing nature of Israeli society by examining film clips from movies spanning the decades, including “Hill 24 Doesn’t Answer,” “Sallah,” “Late Summer Blues,” “Lemon Tree” and “The Wedding Plan.” Presented in partnership with the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. Sunday, May 6, 7:30 p.m. $10/$12.

Cooking Moroccan Cuisine

With Merav Dahan. Celebrate the foods and culture of Israel with Merav Dahan as she demonstrates how to make delightful Moroccan dishes, including a variety of salads, tagine chicken, couscous and gribatz cookies. Known for her fun, fast and fabulous recipes, Merav offers tricks and tidbits while you enjoy sampling each dish. Wednesday, May 9, 7-9:30 p.m., $65/$78.
