It wouldn’t be inaccurate to call Kayal Orthopaedics an “integrative orthopedic care” practice, because it offers specialists and specialty services in more than half a dozen related fields of medical and therapeutic care.
With multiple clinic locations throughout the area and surgical privileges in eight area hospitals in New Jersey and New York, there is sure to be an office that’s convenient. Equally important is the availability of rehabilitation services focused on these specialties, whether for sports medicine; general bone, joint or muscular injuries; joint replacement; or pain management, as well as rheumatology and osteoporosis care centers and an imaging center.
Dr. Robert A. Kayal, MD, FAAOS, FAAHKS, board certified orthopaedic surgeon, founder, president, CEO and chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery, shared, “Our practice is comprised of a team of the highest trained surgeons and specialists, offering the latest innovative treatments and state-of-the-art equipment.” He emphasized the compassion and highly individualized care, and Kayal’s commitment to excellence. “Our patient experience is second to none. We get you the best results and we get them to you fast.”

Dr. Jonathan Reisman, DO (doctor of osteopathic medicine). is also board certified in physiatry (physical medicine and rehabilitation) and pain management. No wonder he has chosen to be affiliated with an orthopaedic practice.
While the majority of treatment in an orthopaedic practice is often focused on the care and injuries of the musculoskeletal system and its support structures, pain is no stranger to the field either. Pain can be acute, as in a fresh injury; chronic pain that has resisted treatment over time or has no known direct cause; or post-operative pain that improves and resolves over time. But all of these pain circumstances have successful, evidence-based treatment regimes. And no longer is treatment limited to prescription or over-the-counter pain medication. In fact, many alternatives to drugs and surgery exist, and many of them are available under the expert and compassionate care of specialists at Kayal Orthopaedics.
Dr. Reisman explained, “In addition to the traditional medical curriculum, osteopathic medical schools have an extra focus on the relationship between the mind, body and spirit. Every patient is unique and each patient’s injury may require different treatment based on their life circumstances and preferences. Throughout my internship in internal medicine, residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation and fellowship in pain management, I learned minimally invasive techniques to treat pain and promote healing. A major focus is on prevention.” On intersecting with orthopaedic care, he continued, “At the Kayal Orthopaedic Center, I work with some of the best and brightest orthopaedic surgeons, and we combine our backgrounds to offer customized and comprehensive surgical and nonsurgical plans that keep patients comfortable and functional while considering their preferences and medical needs.” He adds the important note that orthopaedic surgery can prevent many injuries from becoming chronic conditions.
Shifting to the sports injury aspect of the practice, Dr. Jeffrey Pope, MD, FAAOS, is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon and chief of sports medicine and arthroscopy. “I see patients of all ages, from Little League injuries to pickle ball and golf. We serve as team physicians for many local high schools. Our goal is to get the patient back on the field as quickly and safely as possible.”
Notably, explained Dr. Edward Lin, MD, FAAOS, a board certified orthopaedic surgeon and chief of hand and upper extremity, hand and upper-extremity injuries are common in high school and collegiate sports. Kayal is experienced in working with the coaching staff, players and parents to return scholastic athletes back to play as efficiently as possible.

Amit Sood, MD, FAAOS, board certified orthopaedic surgeon and chief of shoulder surgery, pointed out that Kayal works with year-round high school athletes in a variety of different sports, especially football, which tends to incur the highest number of sports-related injuries. “We also have teams come in the day after their games for rehab treatment as needed with our physical therapists and chiropractors and to get them rehabbed and ready for the next game. With or without an injury, our goal is to provide the athletes a comprehensive approach towards rehabilitation with our team of health professionals.”
He also pointed out, “Technology continues to improve surgery and outcomes, with the most recent advancement being the development of robotic-assisted surgery, which allows us to accurately place implants in a patient-specific manner with extreme precision. It virtually eliminates variability and enhances patient outcomes. In addition to robotic-assisted surgery, the development of virtual-reality headsets can allow visualization of patient anatomy and pertinent patient information regarding the surgery in real time to help navigate through the procedure. All of these developments allow for more accurate surgery and eliminate surgeon variability.”
“With the increasing number of the young population participating in sports, there has also been an increase in orthopaedic injuries like fractures or ligament tears. It is important to identify the injury as quickly as possible,” said Victor Ortiz, MD. Dr. Ortiz is a board certified orthopaedic surgeon and chief of hip surgery. He noted that the recent advances in robotic orthopaedic surgery allow not only a more accurate procedure, which translates to better patient outcomes, but also that patients can go home the same day and start their recovery in the comfort of home and family.
Dr. Pope elaborated on this point. “Virtual reality–augmented surgery and artificial intelligence allows surgeons to innovate new ways of treating patients with arthritis, ligament tears, fractures and spine conditions. In addition, I am very excited to spearhead cartilage restoration for our practice. In certain cases, we can regrow a patient’s own cartilage and reverse the process of arthritis.” That piece of news is sure to be very meaningful and encouraging for the mature population.
In the arena of pain management, there are numerous excellent advancements available at Kayal. Steve M. Aydin, DO, board certified physician and chief of physiatry and interventional pain management, explained, “A procedure we offer is vertebral augmentation for patients suffering from spinal compression fracture. Vertebral augmentation is considered noninvasive and can provide significant pain relief. It involves placing a balloon that creates a space to inject cement that stabilizes the fractured bone. It is a same-day procedure and can offer a patient relief from a severely painful and debilitating fracture. Both of these procedures provide a minimally invasive approach and option to two very painful and functionally limiting conditions.”
Dr. Reisman also described spinal cord stimulators, implantable devices that block pain signals before they reach the brain. The stimulator helps people who suffer from chronic pain conditions such as lumbar radiculopathy (leg and/or hip area pain generated by lumbar nerve root impingement) or diabetic neuropathy. “Before they are implanted we do a seven-day trial, where the device remains strapped outside of the body, offering life-enhancing pain relief for conditions that were previously untreatable.”
