This past week, Kinneret students in grades five and six engaged in several workshops to increase unity and reduce alienation, as they work to build their classrooms into safe and nurturing environments, and create a stronger sense of belonging. Utilizing the renowned Israeli research-based program called Uplifters/Matzmichim, the students used questioning techniques to start conversations, interactive games to bring students together and open communication to create long-term relationships.

Run by certified Uplifters counselor Anat Elmekias Valfer, School Psychologist Dr. Deborah Weitz and Assistant Principal Allyson Israel, students became more empowered to not only stand up for those students “getting lost” in the system, but gained leadership skills such as listening skills and positive communication. As Valfer emphasizes, “Uplifters gives students the tools to address feelings of social isolation amongst themselves and their friends in addition to helping students understand and express their emotions.” This unique program gets booster sessions in the upcoming months and also in the upper grades to reinforce the techniques learned in seminar.

Kinneret’s commitment to Uplifters has resulted in reduced feelings of isolation and uncertainty by creating an environment of understanding, kindness and support among students.
