Kudos to ‘Spirit of Purim’ Letter Writer

I am responding to a letter to the editor entitled “Bring Back the Spirit of Purim,” by Michelle Kohn in the February 27, 2020 issue. I want to say kudos to Ms. Kohn for writing this absolutely necessary letter addressing the ridiculously expensive cost of Purim these days due to peer pressure, media pressure and various other factors. I know that Purim has become more about how original your mishloach manot theme is and how many you produce, than about fulfilling the mitzvah of mishloach manot and promoting goodwill and love between Jews. In any case, who needs all the junk and candy one month before Pesach? What I particularly appreciated in Ms. Kohn’s letter was that she not only provides constructive criticism of today’s Purim frenzy, but she also offers suggestions for how to improve the situation. Her suggestions are great: buy cards from a tzedaka and send those in lieu of another junk-filled container, or send mishloach manot through a charity, such as Project Ezrah or Yachad, so that at least there is some benefit to your mitzvah. I wholeheartedly thank Ms. Kohn for “going there” and addressing some very disturbing trends in our Purim celebrations.
