Lander College for Men is a leader in offering courses in sports management. This past fall 2020 a Sports Management course was offered with such outstanding speakers as Mark Wilf, president and owner of the Minnesota Vikings; Lawrence Burian, executive vice president of Madison Square Garden Sports; Chaim Bloom, chief baseball officer of the Boston Red Sox; and Seth Cantor, chief marketing director of the Rockland Boulders—all via Zoom.
In addition, a course in Business Ethics was offered using a sports orientation to help the students understand sports ethics.
In spring 2021, two sports courses will be offered: Sports Analytics (Tuesday and Thursday 3:00-4:15 p.m.) to the day students and Sports and Event Marketing (Monday and Wednesday 7:05-8:10 p.m.) to the Lander evening students for the first time. The field of Sports Management continues to expand and Orthodox students have opportunities for employment and careers in many areas of the profession.
Presently, Lander College for Men offers four sports courses, with a fifth in development. The school is working on developing a sports management minor at the school. No Jewish affiliated school offers as many sports courses as LCM.
In addition to bringing in many speakers into class, my professional contacts have been able to offer students real life projects as part of the classroom experience. This has led to LCM students being offered sports internships for credit, as well as permanent positions in the sports field. I also work with the Career Services office to have sports companies recruit students on campus.
Plans for the Sports Analytics class include participating again in the prestigious SABR Diamond Dollar Case Competition against some of the best colleges in the country. The last time the LCM traveled to NYU. This time the team will compete via Zoom. Planned speakers are Michael Fishman, assistant general manager of the New York Yankees; John Morris, director of Business Intelligence of the New York Mets; and Dr. Gil Fried, chair of the Sports Management Program at University of New Haven, who wrote the sports analytics book we will be using.
Students interested in taking the Sports Analytics or Sports and Event Marketing courses should contact the Office of Admissions at Lander College for Men 718-820-4919.
