In his column “Why Mainstream Jewish Groups Didn’t Defend Yeshiva University” (October 6, 2022) Mr. Tobin offered useful insights about the controversy at YU over the funding of a club for LGBT students. However, his conclusion that the actions of the school result in “making an Orthodox university a pariah in the public square” did not sit well with me. The term “pariah” is often associated with episodes of antisemitic attacks on Jews. I do pray that the policy of the university, whether one agrees with it or not, will not trigger antisemitism. Sadly, given the divided current political climate in the U.S., what the institution is doing in opposition to recognition of LGBT equal rights may even elevate its prominence among a large segment of our population.
