As Bergen County residents prepared to vote this Tuesday, kindergarten class K-1 of The Moriah School had itsown election. The 22 students in K-1 voted on an entry for Lazy Bean Cafe’s “Create Your Own Coffee Contest.”
All the children submitted an idea, and then the class voted to decide which idea would be entered. It was a close race. Although lemonade–yes, lemonade–was a strong contender, the majority voted for s’mores, and K-1 submitted its entry: the S’Moriah School Latte.
Why would a kindergarten class enter a coffee flavor contest, you ask? Although the children entered for fun, they saw an opportunity to do some acts of chesed. If they win, they stand to receive a $100 Glatt Express gift card and a free coffee every week for a year. The children discussed what they should do with the prizes. The Moriah School and K-1 collect paper goods for Chesed 24/7. They decided they would put the $100 gift card towards the purchase of more paper goods for this organization. Chesed 24/7 uses the donations to stock the kosher hospitality rooms in Englewood Hospital and Medical Center and Hackensack University Medical Center.
After submitting its entry to Lazy Bean, the class received a swift response from Lazy Bean/Glatt Express owners Dani and Tammy Secemski. The Secemskis visited K-1 on Monday (with some delicious treats in tow) and discussed the contest with the children. K-1 was so excited to explain how it arrived at its entry by voting. The class also told its special visitors what it hopes to do with the prizes if it wins. The contest and the visit from the Secemskis was a great source of excitement and enthusiasm for K-1. The children are still hoping to win, but they were happy just to have their entry acknowledged in such a big way. The class’ teachers said that they are so proud of their young students for asking to participate in a contest only to give their winnings to others. It sounds like a win for the S’Moriah School Latte would really be a win for many.
