Learning Comes Alive At Heichal HaTorah

This week, Heichal HaTorah’s senior Medical Ethics elective was privileged to hear from Glenn Pfeiffer about his experience as a living kidney donor. Pfeiffer’s session was the culmination of a unit discussing the ethical and halachic aspects of both living and nonliving kidney donations, with the students surveying medical background, ethical issues and relevant halachic sources surrounding organ donation. The discussion sessions were brought to a practical conclusion with the presentation by Pfeiffer, who described the process led by Renewal to match up donors and recipients and how many lives have been saved as a result of the efforts of this truly remarkable organization. Pfeiffer raised some of the complex and sensitive ethical considerations that many donor candidates must grapple with, and described the experience of a kidney donor, both pre- and post-surgery. The students were moved hearing about Pfeiffer’s journey, and the special heroism of organ donors who give deeply of themselves, many times for people they have never met and may never know.
