Learning, Playing and Mystery-Making: Chanukah at Suburban Torah

(Courtesy of Synagogue of Suburban Torah) It was a truly active Chanukah at Suburban Torah in Livingston as games, classes and even a “Mystery Maccabee” program provided something for everyone while maintaining social distance. Among the highlights was a three-part Zoom class “Giants of the Spirit,” led by Rabbi Elie Mischel on Chanukah as based on the teachings of three Torah giants of our generation—Rabbi Lord Jonathan Sacks, Rabbi Dr. Norman Lamm and Rabbi Adin Steinsaltz—all of whom passed away in recent months.

Members of all ages got into the celebration with the “Mystery Maccabee” as members were paired up with another family to give them a little Chanukah gift. Participants met their Mystery Maccabee in a Zoom meetup, which gave some of the synagogue’s newest members a chance to meet other synagogue members.

The youngest set had a drive-by program of their own, picking up packages of Chanukah games and crafts they could do at home, along with plenty of holiday treats like Chanukah gelt and doughnuts.
