Let’s Reduce Day School Tuition

A recent column in The Jewish Link (“Priceless Purchase,” by Jon Kranz, January 27, 2022) made reference to the tuition costs in our day schools and noted that this is the cost of living an Orthodox life.

No, no, no, I say. That defeatist attitude must stop.

For the past 40 years I have been writing and speaking about free day school education. Not only is it necessary but it is also quite possible. Alas, while I have received applause for my concern, I have not had anyone join with me in this campaign.

Now that I am a Teaneck resident, let me try once again. If we really believe that day school education is supremely important, then we must follow the pattern of free public school education here in the U.S. This has to be our starting position; then we can put our thinking caps on to figure out how to accomplish it.

Yes, I have a plan that I have projected these past 40 years. It is not the only workable solution.

Let me first note that the teachers will continue to receive proper salaries in this plan and that the level of education will not suffer in any way. Of course, there might need to be some concessions in the implementation of our plan.

At first, perhaps this free education might be offered only at the high school level, as an example with, perhaps, a 50% reduction offered.

But let’s get the ball rolling. Who wants to join me in this campaign? Email me at [email protected]
