I read the letter from “Name withheld” (“Supporting Jewish Educators,” March 23, 2023), a parent who was moved by a column written by another “name withheld” — a rebbe who is having difficulty paying his bills (“I’m a Rebbe, and I Can’t Afford to Be a Jewish Educator,” March 9, 2023). The letter writer called for communal support of the many “mechanchim” like the article writer.
I won’t withhold my name. The letter writer hit the nail on the head when he mentioned the brilliant organization Chasdei Lev. Throughout my career in Jewish nonprofit work, I have rarely worked with a more dedicated and generous family. Those behind the Chasdei Lev project are true angels and immense baalei Chesed. More importantly, their idea works!
I urge our communal leadership to learn more about Chasdei Lev and see how we can emulate what they’ve done, tailored uniquely to the needs of our rabbeim and teachers who give so much of themselves to educate our children.
