What event could possibly pull together hundreds of women from different communities, backgrounds, religious and political groups to generate an environment of strength that can only be described as “Jewish woman power”? Participating in The Great Big Challah Bake, happening Thursday, October 22, 2015 in Bergen County.
It is an opportunity for women and girls from diverse backgrounds to come together for a global event where women will be baking challah together.
We are interested in participation of all Jewish organizations and affiliations. The purpose of this October evening is to reach out to new people and make new friends. Through this event we hope to show our participants that we are links in a chain of Jewish women throughout the world who have more similarities than differences. This event is a unique expression of solidarity and unity with ALL Jewish women. In an era of terrorism, anti-Semitism and divisiveness we are choosing to create an event of harmony, peace and unified strength.
Last year, Bergen County pulled together 300 women. This year we hope to reach 1000 women to gather in strength to share in the Great Big Challah Bake.
Why a Challah Bake?
Why spend an evening where each person gets their hands in the dough—mixing the yeast, water, egg and sugar—to knead, pound and braid a lump of dough?
Why spend an evening with young and old, mothers and daughters to learn about the symbolism of challah and the significance and spirituality of all its ingredients?
Why explore the custom of taking a portion of the bread and learning the traditions held within?
Because challah is Jewish bread and challah holds traditions, ceremonies and symbolism that has been transmitted for thousands of years. Challah is our history.
We invite our women of all ages to join in a powerful, exciting, fun evening of sharing in the tradition of the Great Big Challah Bake.
HOLD THE DATE: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22, 2015.
