Walks the Walk, Talks the Talk

It always perks my interest to read an erudite article written by Stephen M. Flatow to keep me informed of current events in Israel (“Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Israel’s Anti-Terror Strategy,” March 2, 2023). I know that the information he imparts to Jewish Link readership is most informative, insightful and factual.

In discussing Israel’s right to defend itself against terrorism, Mr. Flatow alludes to the penalty of dismantling terrorists’ homes with the backdrop of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, z”l in support of seizure of property of convicted criminals in America as well.

Craig Hanoch, two weeks later, accused Mr. Flatow of misrepresentation in his rebuttal letter to the editor (“A Misrepresentation of the Law,” March 16, 2023). His tone, accusations and comparisons were harsh and the cases used to substantiate his claim did not fully and justly reflect Mr. Flatow’s premise in contrasting America and Israel with their strategies for defense.

The following week, Mr. Flatow responds to Craig Hanoch’s attacking letter of misrepresentation without a tone of strong counterattack or disdain (“Does Israel Have the Right to Defend Itself Against Terrorists?” March 23, 2023). In fact, Mr. Flatow graciously clarifies that self-defense tactics will differ inherently from the region of the Mideast to the Midwest in America by the very nature of contrasting circumstances and nuances with the overriding similarity that asset forfeiture is both permitted in Israeli and American law.

I do not know Mr. Hanoch, but Mr. Flatow certainly gets my vote. Mr. Hanoch’s point in case could have been a fair response, yet his focus was truly one-sided, excluding the variables and stark differences of terror situations here and abroad.

Mr. Flatow is a paradigm of someone who truly “walks the walk and talks the talk.” He had to endure the most horrific fatality of his very own daughter in a bus bombing in Israel. Who better than Mr. Flatow, also an attorney at law, to comment on the pain and terror of terrorist action overall? I’d vote for him any day.

Mr. Flatow, please keep us informed with your passion, knowledge and trust in our High Almighty. Your commitment, dedication and perseverance are truly an inspiration to klal Yisrael for us all to emulate.
