Ma’ayanot continues to lead the way in innovative education. In a unique partnership with the Jewish Orthodox Women’s Medical Association (JOWMA), Ma’ayanot is offering its students who are interested in medical careers an unparalleled, hands-on experience.
The partnership with JOWMA enriches Ma’ayanot’s existing three-year Health Science Elective Curriculum coordinated by Esther Slomnicki. This collaboration is the fusion of a forward-thinking curriculum with direct mentorship from practicing Orthodox women physicians, all within Ma’ayanot’s supportive and engaging environment.
The recent launch event on October 9 was inspiring. Over 125 students and parents experienced the Ma’ayanot-JOWMA collaboration in action. Students participated in workshops led by accomplished Orthodox women physicians, offering a hands-on introduction to medical procedures such as intubation, suturing and laparoscopy. The room buzzed with enthusiasm as students tried their hand at these skills, envisioning themselves in white coats, making a difference in the world of medicine.
These workshops also opened doors to meaningful conversations between students and doctors, who serve not only as educators but as mentors who understand the unique challenges of being an Orthodox woman in health care. JOWMA student liaison Gavriella Adler (‘26) expressed it best: “At Ma’ayanot we learn the importance of achieving our dreams, finding our own voices, and contributing to our communities. With JOWMA’s mentorship programs, aspiring doctors like me will have valuable guidance.”
Parents were equally impressed by the groundbreaking program. Many remarked how they wished such an opportunity had existed when they were in high school. Ma’ayanot’s Health Sciences program is more than just an elective; it’s a launching pad for the next generation of female physicians, surgeons and health care leaders. By combining rigorous academics with hands-on learning and mentorship, Ma’ayanot ensures that its students are not only prepared for medical school but also empowered to positively impact their communities.
