Ma’ayanot seniors learned important life skills when Suzanne Cohen, the chair of the Tanakh Department and the director of Israel Guidance gave them a special seminar on car mechanics. Students learned how to check and adjust tire pressure, check and add oil, add wiper fluid, change a tire and jump start a car. Cohen told a story of how one year she got a message from a student whose car wouldn’t start, asking if she could come to the other side of Teaneck and jump start it. Cohen showed the girl how to attach the cables and thankfully the car started right up. A couple of weeks later the student returned to Mrs. Cohen all excited, and explained that she had been at the library and saw an older couple bent over the engine of their car in the parking lot. She approached to see if she could help, and they said their battery was dead.
Fortunately, they had jumper cables, and the student was able to attach the cables and start their car for them! In truth, this seminar came none too soon, because a few days later someone had a flat tire in the Ma’ayanot parking lot, and the seniors were able to change the tire and replace it with a spare because of what they had learned in their car mechanics class.
Watch out Chaverim, here comes Ma’ayanot!
