Ma’ayanot Health Students Dive Into Kidney Transplants

Ma’ayanot’s ninth and 10th grade Health Science Elective students spent last week immersed in an in-depth exploration of kidney disease and kidney donation. They learned about kidney disease from nephrologist Dr. Meir Zelkowitz (father of junior Tali Zelkowitz) and heard the personal kidney donation story of Michal Kahan (mother of sophomore Liana Kahan), who donated her kidney through Renewal. Finally, the students were able to watch (via Zoom) a live kidney transplant surgery taking place at the Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center through a program run by Liberty Science Center. The attending surgeon explained each step of the surgery while he was performing it and answered all questions that the students posed.
