Ma’ayanot commemorated Yom Ha’shoah with a candle lighting ceremony after tefilah. The viewing of the documentary “Rene and I” followed. The film tells the story of a set of twins who were experimented upon by Josef Mengele and other Nazi doctors. Afterwards, Rene Slotkin, a twin from the film, shared her reflections and answered student questions. Students also constructed space for meaningful reflection by creating museum-like exhibits in the hallways. The exhibits focused on various ghettos and concentration camps, and provided information about righteous gentiles and survivors. Finally, students gathered together at the end of the day for slow shira (singing) and the sharing of personal stories of relatives who lived through the Shoah.
