Malka Averick Agus is not your typical math and Ivrit tutor, but tutoring is definitely a skill that seems to come quite naturally to her. Just take one look at her resume and you’ll not only notice how long she has been giving instruction to people of all ages and backgrounds, but also the different subject areas she covers.
Born and raised in Israel, Agus grew up in Beit Shemesh and Modiin. She speaks perfect English, in a perfect American accent, and attributes it to her parents, who are originally from Chicago but made aliyah before she was born. She currently has three brothers serving in the IDF. She loves teaching and working with children, especially when it comes to her 21 nieces and nephews.
With a natural aptitude for academics, Agus always loved math and considers it one of her favorite subjects. After majoring in physics and Talmud at her high school in Beit Shemesh she earned a degree in economics and sustainability at Reichman University. All throughout college she regularly tutored her fellow students in math simply because she enjoyed it so much. She graduated a few months ago and hopes to one day work for an energy company.
Before attending Reichman University, Agus did a stint in the army where she served as an infantry instructor and a head office manager for a battalion commander of Gadsar Nahal. As a head office manager, Agus was responsible for delivering presentations to high-level army officers and foreign nationals. She was also often deployed to active combat zones for lengthy periods of time and was responsible for coordinating, synchronizing and communicating with several IDF units, civilian operators and international bodies.
As an infantry instructor, she gave professional training, both in and out of classrooms, for infantry soldiers serving in Golani, Givati, Kfir, Nahal and paratrooper units. Besides working with soldiers on being disciplined and engaged, she also provided small arms instruction as well as driving instruction for heavy anti-aircraft vehicles.
Agus says tutoring comes naturally to her, and she certainly seems to have an abundance of experience doing it. She started tutoring in high school, volunteering for underprivileged children. But it wasn’t always school subjects that she was teaching. An avid swimmer and surfer, Agus was also a head surfing instructor who worked with at-risk youth, giving them a much-needed outlet.
