I just read the article of Yaakov Meir, “Remembering Basketball Star Marvin Hershkowitz, One of Yeshiva University’s Most Iconic Alumni” (June 25, 2020). The article is well written from a basketball perspective as Marv Hershkowitz’s shooting form was so flawless that it was featured on the cover of various basketball magazines that existed at the time. However, what the article does not address is the type of person and Jew that Marv Hershkowitz was.
I had the zechut to meet and work with Marv Herskowitz in Camp Morasha. Marv was completely selfless with his time, always taught with the most calm demeanor and was always interested in whatever ideas and goals we had about sports, Judaism, Israel and life in general. He developed such a love for Israel that he lived there and brought people back with him to attend Camp Morasha. He was completely devoted to his wife, Mimi, who was the head of the Morasha dining room.
This basketball icon had complete midot both on and off the court. He was a mentor, coach, co-worker and friend to so many and was loved by the entire staff in Camp Morasha. He was a role model worthy of emulating.
