MDS first graders visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art to continue their art education of the artists they have been studying, who use color theory and music to create their artwork. At the Met, the students learned about the artists Joel Shapiro and moved their bodies like the sculpture, and Piet Mondrian and his unique style of using primary colors in geometric patterns. Leyla Demirtas taught them how to sketch artwork they saw and then discuss their feelings about the artwork. The students also viewed the artwork of Max Ernst, Vassily Kandinsky, Victor Braumer, Sol Lewitt, Chuck Close and Jackson Pollack. They then learned all about the history of these artists, discussed why they created such artwork and then compared and contrasted the artwork that came before, during and after them. The students thoroughly enjoyed expanding their knowledge of the diverse and varied forms of art!
