Welcome to “Organelle Speed Dating!” Each student in Esther Slomnicki’s ninth grade biology class prepared a “dating profile” of a specific organelle. They included a “cell-fie,” theme song, hashtag, characteristics about the organelle, and “bad traits” (ie, what would happen to the cell if the organelle was defective). The mood in the lab was set with a crackling fireplace and soft acoustic music. Students rotated around the lab, meeting other organelles and determining which organelles would be a good match for them. They rated their matches on a scale of 1-10 and discussed their matches at the end. The girls did a great job of connecting functions that their own organelle performed with similar or related functions of other organelles.
