Mega Challah Bake Expects 200 Women in Franklin Lakes

The Jewish Women’s Circle anticipates a sold-out crowd of 200 women at the ‘Mega Challah Bake’ in Franklin Lakes on Wednesday, October 24, at 7:00 p.m. for an evening of inspiration, camaraderie and traditional challah baking.

The Mega Challah Bake was first conceived of in 2014 as a way to unite Jewish women in a tradition that connects them with over 100 generations of their ancestors, and has since snowballed into an international phenomenon that has been held in nearly 100 cities worldwide with attendance exceeding 1,000 at times.

Mimi Kaplan, chairwoman of the Mega Challah Bake, noted that she “had organized a group Challah Bake in 2001 in Wyckoff with nearly 50 women participating but now we’re taking it to an entirely new level. We have 20 table captains, customized aprons, giveaways and a unique URL at www.megachallahbake.org. With just over two weeks to go, over half the seats are reserved and we anticipate selling out the event.”

The Hebrew word challah refers to the two loaves of bread that form the core of the meal on the Jewish Sabbath. But in its more basic, Biblical and technical meaning, challah refers to the piece of dough that is traditionally separated and consecrated to God every time we bake bread.
